The theme of the paintings is the city and specially the renovating city. For years Van der Hofstede has been painting and taking photographs of the skyline of The Hague and the buildings that are going to be destroyed.

Het thema van the schilderijen is de stedelijke omgeving en dan vooral de stadsvernieuwing. Van der Hofstede is al jaren bezig de Haagse hoogbouw op foto te zetten alsook panden die leegstaan om gesloopt te worden.
Het eerste geschilderde werk met dit onderwerp dateert uit 2003. Het betreft een muurschildering in de Frederikstraat in Crooswijk, Rotterdam. De muren van een hoge doorgang in een nieuwbouwblok zijn zo beschilderd dat het lijkt alsof de doorgang ontstaan is door een woning af te breken. Men ziet resten behang, trapleuningen, tegels enzovoort.
Een tweede project was een aantal schilderijen van de sloop van het kantoorpandje op de hoek van de van de Boschstraat en de Schenkweg in Bezuidenhout-west (eind 2006).
Sindsdien is de stadsvernieuwing van Den Haag zijn vaste onderwerp.

'Hoek Parallelweg en Stationsweg'
Een schilderij van een plek in Den Haag waar ik jarenlang elke dag kwam. Niettemin vraag ik me af of ik het herkend zou hebben. De titel brengt uitsluitsel: 'Hoek Parallelweg en Stationsweg'. "De kunstenaar Willem van der Hofstede is al jaren bezig de Haagse hoogbouw op foto te zetten alsook panden die leegstaan om gesloopt te worden.", vermeldt het persbericht. Op de foto te zetten... Het schilderij lijkt inderdaad zwaar beïnvloed door (het standpunt en kadrering van) de fotografie. Waarschijnlijk lag er letterlijk een foto aan ten grondslag.
Waarom dan toch een schilderij? Op basis van de foto zou ik de plek onmiddellijk gelocaliseerd hebben. Vertraagt de schilderkunst de blik? Verblindt schilderkunst? Wat komt er dan voor in de plaats? De beheersing, het gezag, de vaardigheid van de maker? Heeft dit beeld de gedaante van een schilderij om respect voor de kunstenaar af te dwingen, om nog duidelijker 'kunst' te kunnen zijn?
Ligt daar mijn twijfel? Ik word enerzijds door het werk ingepakt want het is prachtig, verleidelijk, sfeervol en heeft precies het goede onderwerp, maar anderzijds is het zelfingenomen en narcistisch.

The moment I saw the first photo of the series, I was completely fascinated by its strength and sincerity. I loved the picture that was telling a complete story of that person. The sitter let the photographer see his life and then the photographer translated that life and that moment to me. I wanted to see more of these open but at the same time intriguing characters, who where playing their own life.

This happened nearly two years ago and what I saw then was the first black and white amplification proof for the whole project. The project was still taking form. At that time I had my studio above Marsel Loermans’ and I had no idea I would be having the exhibition space of ArtCube. We talked plenty about portraits, photography and this specific project.

A year later I was moving and I knew I wanted him to exhibit the portrait series at ArtCube. I had no doubt. Marsel knew of my interest on the portraits and last autumn he presented me the little “Momentopnamen van nu” (“Time shoots from now”) book. This small object is full of more than 1600 hundred lives in the form of black and white photo portraits. As I have it in my hands it makes me think of the Bible or of some kind of dictionary of faces: all different. The contradictory quality of the book is that at the same time it gives the impression that all people photographed are the same, same size, same color, same illumination, all are alike.

After two months Marsel called and we set dates, by the way, it was not ‘his’ project but ‘theirs’, only then I met Anton Spruit, the second half of the makers of the portraits. Anton has a very different personality than Marsel and as I learned they can work very well together.

It was only this week that I saw for the first time the beautiful large as life color portraits that now hang. Thanks to the invitation card we sent I had some idea of the choice of photographs that were going to be brought but I did not imagine the straightforward power of these photographs. My first thought was the link the images had with the traditional Dutch photography. A word came to my mouth: ‘Rembrandt’, the dark background, the ‘decorating’ clothes that seem to be there only to test the artist’s control on drapery, all these factors are there only to emphasize the faces with a falling light from the left, and that brings me to another word: 'Vermeer'.

Some of the people who have seen the photographs with me have told me they thought seeing from the outside that they were looking at paintings. Others noticed the relaxed posing of the sitters in contrast to the appearance of having being taken at a studio. But what I hear the most is the word ‘purity’. These real people in their most pure way are photographed with perfectionism and sensitiveness. Both artists Marsel Loermans and Anton Spruit talk about each photo by their subject names with a clear empathy, and they told me stories about each one of those that are hanging. They have respect for their achieved result and all their subjects. You have to remember they were 1614 portraits of people and who knows how many photographs were taken.

As you can observe at the photographs, it seems as the people are looking at you, expecting you to discover their lives and feel what they feel. They are alive and present. Sadly enough one of the most impressive sitters of one of the best photographs has already passed away. And that brings me back to the title of the little book, the photographs had made of them permanently ‘moments from now’.

I wanted to share with you my aesthetic experience with these photographs and consciously without going into the details of the commission they were made for or the institution that commissioned it. The history and stories are an added value to the photos but for me they are strong enough on their own.

De samenwerking tussen Marsel Loermans, fotograaf en Anton Spruit, vormgever bestaat sinds 1988. Aanvankelijk maken zij fotografische illustraties en band-dia programma’s in opdracht. De laatste jaren krijgt hun werk een meer autonoom karakter.
De dunne scheidslijn tussen werk in opdracht en autonoom bleek volledig te verdwijnen bij een opdracht van de instelling voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, ’s Heeren Loo, (voorheen Boldershof-Waalborg). Bij gelegenheid van het honderdjarig bestaan portretteerden zij 1614 medewerkers en cliënten. Zo ontstond een serie portretten die -indirect- de maatschappelijke positie van mensen met een beperking ter discussie stelt.

A sensual installation

The 360 degrees installation of Ilse Versluijs' "Esli jewellery" is ready.
It is an exhibition aimed to interact with all senses. The textures of artificial fur, cacao seeds, grand mother's porcelain cups and sensuous ceramic sculptures share the feeling of the glass beads on leather of Ilse's jewellery. When you try a necklace you will also feel the soft contact of the leather that is the support of the jewellery. The warm combinations of glass beads which form flower designs is a visual joy. Most of the necklaces are not symmetric what ads a playful touch to them.
You will smell not only tea and cacao shells but also the real chocolate bonbons specially hand made for the exhibition and all visitors will be seduced to taste them.
Accompanying Versluijs' "Esli jewellery" are some of her organic ceramics, they make you think of forests and unknown plants still to be named. It is also the first time that she will be showing her pencil and ball pen drawings of plant shadows. This kind of drawing can also be done as permanent wall paintings.

Van 25 november tot en met 20 december 2007 toont ArtCube gallery de Esli jewellery sieraden van Ilse Versluijs.
Het is de eerste keer dat autonoom beeldend kunstenaar Ilse Versluijs met sieraden naar buiten treedt.
De sieraden worden getoond in een installatie-achtige setting. Op de zachte bonttafel worden de colliers op gouden borden opgedist. De uitstraling van de colliers is warm en rijk, hoewel de gebruikte techniek en materialen betrekkelijk eenvoudig zijn. Het zachte leer maakt het dragen op de huid tot een prettige ervaring, terwijl de uitbundige bloemenpatronen bestaande uit vele kleine opgenaaide glaskralen echte aandachttrekkers zijn.
De sensualiteit van de kleuren en het materiaal nodigt uit tot aanraking. Er mag dan ook gepast worden! Er zijn voornamelijk colliers, maar ook armbanden en ringen.

You are invited to the presentation of the last portraits and other photo work of Marisa Polin. Mederlanders is a series of paint portraits of all dutch people represented by women and men, the old and the young, known and less known, religious and not.

Simil is a photographic project on people with alike looks consciously or by coincidence. The photographs had been taken in many different countries as Brazil, Italy, Spain, Hungary or The Netherlands.

ID igital is a visual research on self portrait on internet, based on an internet group of 'friends' of young people in Mexico City.

On the photo series Rio we see lonely odd balconies with swimming pools.
